Union Civil War Soldier, Prisoner of War. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he answered President Lincoln's call for volunteers during the Civil War and enlisted to serve in the Union Army. Clayton was mustered into Company D with the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry as a Private for three years' service. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in September of 1863 and became a prisoner of war. The Confederates sent him to their prison at Andersonville in Georgia. Clayton succumbed to disease nine months later and died in July of 1864 when he was 18 years old. He was buried on the grounds outside the prison's stockade. A cenotaph in his memory is inscribed on his family's monument at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
