The monument was erected by Fort Phoenix Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, on May 13, 1915.
"Lieuts. Metcalf and Gordon were in command of a small body of Continental soldiers who offered the first resistance to the British during the raid on Bedford village and on around the head of the Acushnet River. Lieut. Metcalf died of wounds received in this encounter and was buried in the old cemetery at Acushnet with military honors."
