"Weep Not Loving Ones For Us,
We Are In Heaven Waiting Thee"

According to family bible records in the possession of a Harrison descendant (and cited in several published histories), William Harrison was born in 1807 in a location referred to in his bible records as "Sura", North Carolina near the headwaters of the Dan River. It is beleived that this was the settlement known as "Saura" or Sauratown at the time Williams's birth, in the Saura mountains in northwest North Carolina. Upper Sauratown on the Dan River was first in Rockingham County which later became part of Surry County, and then later became a part of Stokes County in 1789 several years prior to William's birth.

William had two brothers, named Lewis Harrison (see Find A Grave Memorial# 54959956) and Tyree Harrison (see Find A Grave Memorial# 81898409), as well as possibly two or more sisters including Sarah Eliza Harrison who married Noah Giesler. The names of their parents are unknown, other than that the mother is referred to in sources as "Widow" Harrison. Several researchers now believe these Harrisons were in Kentucky after leaving NC/TN, just prior to coming to Missouri in the very early 1800's. They first settled in the Franklin and Crawford County, MO area circa 1820-1830, then later appear in land and census records in Maries and Phelps County, MO. County boundaries changed frequently during the 1800's. We believe the three Harrison brothers took up land early and homesteaded their farms, and the county boundaries changed while they stayed put on their land. Land records support this. It is believed they first came to Missouri in a large wagon train of neighbors and settlers arriving from Kentucky in a group led by Daniel Boone, which included the families of Duncan and Bradford among others. Descendants of these families inter-married. These Harrisons may have been related to the family of Captain Benjamin Harrison, who also settled in the Crawford County area in the very early 1800's.

The Widow Harrison, her adult sons including William, their sisters, spouses and extended families settled in Crawford County, and took up lands that later became a part of Maries County and Phelps County, where they established farms and raised their families. William married Nancy Shepherd whose family came from Kentucky and lived with his bride on a farm in Maries County, Missouri. Their marriage is recorded in Greene County, Missouri; we do not yet know why they married in that location (Springfield area) as other Harrison-Shepherd kin were not known to have lived in that area at that time period. William already had a farm established near his brothers in the Crawford- Maries County area of Missouri, at the time of his marriage. William and Nancy were the parents of several sons and daughters. William died at the age of 86 in 1896. He is buried at Bowles Chapel Cemetery in HighGate, Maries County, Missouri.
