His father is purportedly William Layton/Laton, a North Carolina Revolutionary War soldier who died in Sampson County, North Carolina in 1824. Family history researchers have never identified the wife of William Layton.

John Layton likely died in Washington County, Georgia, between 1838 (GA Property Tax record) and the 1850 Fed census. Numerous internet family trees use 1840 as his date of death, but provide no proof or valid sources. He cannot be located in the 1840 Fed census of Washington County, GA, however he was enumerated there in the 1820 and 1830 Fed census.

OFFSPRING: Ferribee (Fere) (1805-), Phoebe Phebe (1806-), James (1807-1854), Hilary Hillery (1810-1858), Clarissa (1812-1835), Robert (1814-), William (1818-), Leonard (1822-1874).

From "John Layton Family" genealogy manuscript by Bessie Elton, 1972. [comments by others in brackets]:

John Layton was the founder of the Layton families in Washington County, Georgia. He was born in the Mingo Church community of Sampson County, North Carolina.

He and his wife Clarissa [Hartley], migrated to Washington County, Georgia about 1817 and settled on a 200 acre farm bounded by Williamson Swamp [located a few miles east of present day Sandersville] and B. Hartley land [assume this is BURRELL Hartley Sr., re 1820 Fed census showing them next door to each other].

John became a member of the Ohoopee Baptist Church, [Washington Co., GA] on November 15, 1824. In Dec 1825, he, his wife, and two oldest daughters, Phoebe and Fere, became members of Sisters Baptist Church and were active members for many years [there is a present day church of that name just east of Sandersville, Washington Co., GA]. John Layton, .....(names of other men)...... were among the church leaders 1825-1840.
