Brief History for Heber Thomas Odekirk 1924 - 1995
Heber Thomas Odekirk was born in 1924 and spent the first 14 years of his life living on the family homestead near Roosevelt, Utah on the Ute Indian Reservation. he went to an Indian school where he was a member of the minority. The children were shown western movies and he felt compelled to cheer for the Indians.
Life on the reservation made for a free and happy childhood. Dealings with the Indians were congenial and friendly. Tom's father negotiated a lease for grazing land with the Indian agent that was signed by two of the Indians with their mark. It was not uncommon to share a meal with Indian neighbors. They liked his mother's cooking, which is no surprise to any one who has eaten it because she still is among the world's best cooks.
The family moved to Ogden, Utah when Tom was fifteen. He met Donna Brady at a roller skating rink. It was love at first sight and they were married in 1945. Their son, David was born in 1946 and two years later daughter Gaylene was born. The children were a joy to the family as are their growing number of grandchildren.
Tom spent his working career in the construction business, both working, for others and for himself, for more than 40 years. He founded his own construction company and has built a number of industrial and residential structures. His greatest please was in building their own home, which has served the family well for 40 years. Donna indicates that if Tom had his way he would roof the whole world.
Tom tells us that his most sincere desire is that everyone might have a life as happy as his has been.
