Banyan Wright Payne was a son of Banyan and Nancy M. Wright Payne of Tipton County, Tennessee. Upon his father's death in 1878, B.W. Payne was given a tract of land referred to as the "Chute Tract", worth about $3,000 by his father. It was located along the Paducah and Memphis Railroad Line in Tipton County, Tennessee. For whatever reason, Banyan Wright Payne did not stay in Tipton County, but decided to set out for Indian Territory. He married Sarah Clementine Thomas about 1888. For the 1900 Census, the couple was living in the Chickasaw Nation. Banyan and Sarah had four children: John Edward, Maggie Ethel, Virgil Lee, Oleander Cora, and James Fentress Payne. A descendant of Oleander Cora Payne has shared that Banyan W. Payne is buried at the Bee Cemetery, but that there is no gravestone for him.
