Son of Nathan Slay Jr. Mary S. (Polly) Powell.
He enlisted on September 25, 1861 at Mt. Sterling, Alabama in Company C. Wood's Regiment, Confederate Calvary. He enlisted on April 2, 1862 at Choctaw County, Alabama in Company E 32nd AL Calvary. He was appointed First Sergeant on May 20, 1862; elected Second Lieutenant on October 15, 1862; and appointed Third Lieutenant on November 5, 1862. Hiram Slay died January 1, 1863 from wounds received at the Engagement at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, December 31, 1862 to January 3, 1863.
