Today Mimi went to be with her lifelong love, Sammy.
In 1991, my cat Sam and I were watching the noon news on TV while a local shelter was featuring a tabby kitten. I looked up and told Sammy, "That's your new 'brother'." The next day, I visited Animal Haven and was chosen by Mimi who climbed up the side of the cage to get my attention. I was hooked and she came right home with me. At first, Sam, who had been an only cat, didn't know how to react to a kitten, but she loved him right away and won him over. They were never far from each other until Sam passed away in 2009.
Mimi seemed to grieve for months after we lost Sam, but eventually she got back her lively personality and her eating picked up again. In Dec 2009, though, we noticed she was losing a lot of weight. The vet suspected cancer, but she told us that expensive diagnostic tests might not be definitive and treatment might be too difficult for Mimi at her age, so we started treating her with steroids to keep her weight up. That worked wonderfully for over a year, but on January 21, a final exam indicated that her weight had dropped to 3 lbs 13 oz and we knew it was time. We brought her home for her last weekend. I believe that her remaining companions, Robbie, Lizzie and Midnight all knew something was wrong and they seemed to be saying their good-byes.
It's so hard to lose someone who has been such a big part of my life for so long, but I take comfort in knowing that she's at peace now. I'll always love you, Mimi!
