John was from Clonbur, County Galway, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States and began a successful new life in Pittsburgh. With his wife Mary Cassidy, whom he married in the U.S., he had six children, Catherine, Marie, Edward, John, Jr., Elizabeth, and Dorothy. When his unmarried sister Bridget called him home, saying she wanted to immigrate too, he dutifully went over, thinking he'd arrange for his family to join them and they would all eventually go to Pittsburgh together. However, Bridget decided she wanted to remain in Ireland, and John was very disappointed over this wasted trip home. John perished on the Titanic on his return voyage, aged forty-two. Initially it was believed his body had been recovered and buried on Long Island, but the historical records show that none of the passengers from Galway who perished were ever recovered.
