Kate's life came to a tragic end in 1918 when the ship she took a journey in hit a reef near Ontario, Canada and sank hours later with everyone on board. It was during a very bad storm and the ship's captain thought they would be ok until the weather calmed down a bit but they weren't.
If you Google "SS Princess Sophia" you will find a great deal of info on the disaster of this ship's sinking. Kate's husband Charles was supposed to go along on this trip but for some reason he missed the ship's departure according to his obit.
