Plainfield South Cougars football players had another weight to bear during training Monday as they dealt with the weekend death of a teammate.
Anthony Boswell, 17, of Plainfield, drowned Friday in the Fox River near Wedron. Boswell was wading in the river near Ayers Landing when he slipped into an approximately 12-foot-deep hole in the river and drowned at about 6 p.m., said conservation police Sgt. Robert Frazier. Ottawa River Rescue recovered his body at 7 p.m. Frazier said a group of teenagers, a group Boswell was with, were consuming alcohol. Police are investigating who provided the alcohol, Frazier said, and charges are pending.
With Boswell were two 17-year-olds, Miguel A. Rodriguez and Anthony O. Zwirblis, both of Plainfield, both of whom were cited on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor. Two juveniles were also in the group. Zwirblis was on the football team with Boswell last fall.
Grief counselors went to Plainfield South High School on Monday to talk to students who knew Boswell, including his teammates on the football team who have been weight-training over the summer, said Tom Hernandez, director of community relations for Plainfield School District.
One student who was with Boswell over the weekend took advantage of the grief counseling, Hernandez said.
"It is always difficult to lose a loved one, but especially a child, and we offer our prayers for comfort during this difficult time," Hernandez said.
Boswell, who would have started his senior year in August, played football and basketball. Cougar Basketball Coach Ken Bublitz said Boswell will be missed. "I think he was likeable as any young man you would find. He was very personable and well-liked by his peers," Bublitz said.
"I thought he was a talented young man who had tremendous potential and he enjoyed athletics. He participated in both football and baseball and was very talented in both sports," Bublitz said.
The funeral services will be held Saturday at Wallace Funeral Home, 2020 W. Roosevelt Road, Broadview. The wake is from 10 to 11 a.m. and funeral services are from 11 a.m. to noon.
