"Arlene Smith dies Sept. 22
Arlene B. Woodruff Smith died September 22, 1992 in Sun Lakes, Arizona, after a lengthly illness.
Daughter of Norman and Bertha Woodruff, she grew up on the family farm in Bates Township, Hand County. She attended Todd School and graduated from Wessington High School in 1942. After teaching for one year, she moved to Oakland, CA, and worked as a welder until her marriage to Frank J. Smith in 1944.
Frank and Arlene had two children, Laura and Bruce, during an Air Force career of 23 years and many stations.
Arlene volunteered with the American Red Cross and became a staff employee during the Vietnam War, helping overseas servicemen.
After Frank's retirement from Hughes Aircraft in 1980, Arlene and he moved to Arizona where she enjoyed golf and time with her daughter and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Frank, of Sun Lakes, Arizona; daughter Laura Barry of Tucson, AZ; two grandchidren, Corrine and Jess Barry; sister Betty Patridge of Lewiston, ID; brother Gene Woodruff, of Genesee, ID; and brother Victor Woodruff of Wessington.
She was preceded in death by her son Bruce, mother and father, two brothers [Norman Woodruff, Jr., and Joy Woodruff] and one sister[Gladys Woodruff Bell]."
