EX-POLY, USC STAR AKEYSON DIES IN TEMPLETON AT AGE 72
Martin Akeyson , a 1937 graduate of Poly High and star of the football team, died of cancer on June 30 at Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton. He was 72.
Akeyson , a starting left tackle at Poly, helped the team win the 1936 CIF Southern Section title with a 21-0 victory over Glendale at the Rose Bowl.
In 1935, Poly, coached by Orian Landreth, won the Coast League title by beating San Diego High, 7-6.
Akeyson went on to play football at USC under legendary Coach Howard Jones. During the years Akeyson played at USC, the Trojans were ranked seventh in the nation by the Associated Press in 1937 and third in the nation in 1938.
Akeyson graduated from USC and began his career with Bechtel Engineering Corp. Shortly after, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area. He was a resident of Hillsborough and a member of the Burlingame Country Club.
In 1980-83, Akeyson was Bechtel Petroleum's senior representative to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. He retired in 1983 as vice president of Bechtel Petroleum.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; and family.
