Born the son of English immigrant William Hibbs Jr., the progenitor of the Hibbs family line in the United States, and Joanne _______[unknown]. Joseph was likely born in Byberry Township, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Joseph's siblings, all born in Byberry Twp., Pennsylvania, to my knowledge, were Jonathon (b. unknown); Sarah (b. unknown); Phoebe (b. 1697); Jacob (b. 1699); William III (b. 1700); Jeremiah (b. unknown); and Hannah (b. unknown).

In 1714, Joseph married his first wife, Rachel _____ [surname unknown]. On Oct. 15, 1749, he married wife #2, the widower Mrs. Catherine Love.

Because Rachel was not a Quaker, Joseph was eventally expelled from the Quaker Church in 1716, two years after their marriage. A source I have states: "He returned to the Quaker Church in 1734 and apologized for his acts. He was a landowner in Byberry Township in 1723. He was a constable in Bucks County in 1728" ("Hibbs Genealogy: July 24, 1984" by Margaret Hibbs Brokaw.)

Joseph had fourteen children by Rachel, and three by Catherine:

By Rachel, all born in Byberry Twp., Bucks County, Pennsylvania Colony: Catherine (b. 1716 - married John Nyce); William (b. 1722); Sarah (b. 1724 - married John Wing); Rachel (b. 1726, became 1st wife of Robert Smith Jr.); Joseph Hibbs Jr. (b. ca. 1728, married Elizabeth Lacy, founder of the Virginia line of Hibbs, d. 1796); Hannah (b. 1729, married James Cooper 1750, grandmother of American author, James Fenimore Cooper, d. 1777); Jacob (b. 1730, perhaps twin of Phoebe); Phoebe (b. 1730, perhaps twin of Jacob, married Thomas Cooper, the brother of her sister Hannah's husband, James Cooper); John (b. 1732, left Quaker church after marriage to 'unknown' and moved to Virgina, later listed as Captain, 3rd VA Regiment Continental Army); Benjamin (b. 1734); Samuel (b. 1736); Isaac (b. 1740, m. Elizabeth Roberts); Abraham (b. 1742).
Some sources claim that Joseph and Rachel had one other son who married and had "2 or 3 children," and an "unknown male" is listed in my sources, but I have been unable to prove his birth, so I do not include him here.

By Catherine Love: Abraham (b. 1750, m. Hannah Buckman); James (b. unknown, m. Esther Williams); William (b. 1755, m. Elizabeth Booz).

Joseph spent his entire life in Bucks County, Pennsylvania Colony. He died in 1762 and is supposed to be buried in a Friends Burial Ground near Byberry Township.
