Richard J. Powers CHESAPEAKE - Richard J. Powers, 76, died peacefully at home July 1, 2008. He was a native of Philadelphia and was the son of the late Richard and Kathryn Taylor Powers. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a master chief petty officer. He was a Roman Catholic and a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He attended mass regularly at the Chapel at Navy Medical Center Portsmouth. He was a published writer and the founder of the Old Sailors Rest Home. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dorothy M. Powers of Chesapeake; three daughters, Patricia M. Powers of Portsmouth, Maureen Powers Watts and husband Paul of Norfolk and Teresa M. Wanser of Norfolk; three sons, Richard J. Powers and wife Marilyn of Cherry Hill, N.J., William F. Powers and wife Arlene of Chesapeake and Brian Francis Xavier Powers of Cincinnati, Ohio; his brother, William J. Powers and wife Jean of Springfield, Pa.; sister-in-law, Eleanor Gelzinis of Oaklyn, N.J.; 12 grandchildren, Sarah, David, Sean, Kathryn E., William, Natalie, Jeannice, Griffin, Morgan, Robert, Anastasia and Kathryn T.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful dog, Haley. Dick was a world traveler, avid book reader and a friend to all who knew him. He will be missed. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Christ the King Church Building Fund or the American Cancer Society. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1803 Columbia Ave., Norfolk, Tuesday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Father Brian Rafferty. Burial with military honors will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. A Christian wake and visitation will be held in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Monday at 7 p.m. Published in The Virginian Pilot on 7/5/2008
