Patricia Grace DeBarr, 57, of Weston, died Saturday morning, May 3, 2008, at home, after succumbing to facial cancer.
She was born on June 3, 1950 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, William Porter and Mary "Libby" Porter, and step-father Stanley Brooks.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Ray DeBarr; and son Jesse Porter DeBarr; her brothers, Daniel and Stephen Brooks; and sister, Elizabeth "Liz" Brooks; a great-uncle, Richard Porter; and her informal "sons," Philip Ross and Clint Stenger.
She was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Weston, and was a former member of the Cert K-9 Search and Rescue unit. During her life she went to nursing school, became a certified veterinary assistant, a certified ophthalmology assistant, and a certified dog and dog-handler trainer. She loved to learn and read everything she could about cosmology, psychology, astronomy, and about the new discoveries in engineering and technology.
Since her early 30s she has struggled with various medical conditions including lupus and arthritis, a kidney transplant, a replaced hip, multiple fused vertebrae, two bouts with breast cancer, one with cervical cancer, and finally, jaw cancer. Through it all, she could always smile or offer an encouraging word to help someone else through a difficult time.
She had a beautiful soul and the heart of a warrior, her family and friends will miss her greatly, and the world lost a truly wonderful person.
Her body was donated to WVU School of Medicine but a memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Weston on Sat. June 7th at 2:00 pm.
