Member Willie Handcart Company 1856
Born in Cambridgeshire, England
Samuel Gadd was born 25 Jul 1815 at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire, England to William Gadd and Keziah Evans.
Samuel married Eliza Chapman, daughter of William Chapman and Mary Pentlow, 13 Apr 1836 at Croyden, Cambridgeshire, England. They became the parents of nine children all born in England. One died in infancy and is buried there.
Samuel was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 13 Oct 1841, and was ordained an Elder the same year.
He sold everything he could and on 4 May 1856 with his wife and eight surviving children left England for America. They were on the ship Thornton. They became members of the "Willie" handcart Company. This Company left late and was caught in early snow storms and thre was much sickness in the company and many lives were lost.
On 4 Oct 1856 Samuel and Eliza's 2 year old twin son, Daniel died and was buried near Cassa, Platte, Wyoming.
Samuel had contacted a severe cold while standing guard at the Iowa Camp grounds and it never seemed to leave him and developed into pneumonia. The walking and constantly pushing and pulling was too much for him. On the morning of 9 Oct 1856 he was so ill that he was placed in a wagon to rest. When the family checked on him at noon he had died. The Company was then at Glenrock, Converce, Wyoming. He is buried there in an unmarked grave.
He is the father of infant, Alfred, Jane, William, Samuel, Mary Ann, Sarah, twins Daniel and Isaac.
Samuel and Eliza's 10 year old son, Samuel, died 24 Oct 1856 and is buried in a common grave with 12 others who died the same day.
