Richard was a native of California and a 7th generation descendant of German emigrants Georg Michael Mamber/Mumper & Anna Margaretha -?-. He was the youngest of three sons born to Hewlings (1889-1968) and Winifred Cora (Ambrose) Mumper (1891-1947).

Richard's father was a founder in the esteemed Los Angeles and Orange County law firm of Meserve, Mumper & Hughes. He was a graduate of the prestigious Harvard Military Academy in Los Angeles and, following high school, he entered military service in the U. S. Army and served in the European Theater where he was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat.

Richard received the Purple Heart for for his service in Europe during WWII.

He was a graduate of the University of California in Los Angeles where he majored in English Literature and Theater Arts. Following graduation, he relocated to New York City where he studied Drama at C.U.N.Y. and sought a career in the Broadway Theater. In the late 50's, he relocated to Pasadena and began teaching high school English and Drama in the Southern California area; retiring to Laguna Beach in 1970.

Richard had a keen appreciation for art and began purchasing his eclectic collection while in New York and during his teaching career. It was only after his move to Laguna Beach that he truly engaged in this passion; filling his home with that which he loved.

He was the brother of Norris McAllister Mumper, Charles Ambrose Mumper.
Richard had no children but took pride in his nephews Gary, Ken, Bill & Bruce MUMPER.

Dick was also survived by close friends, William "Bill" Swan and Robert "Bob" Jesberg.

Richard lost his short battle with cancer in 1994. His ashes were scattered off the coast of Laguna Beach, CA.
