Lieutenant Colonel Howard Kirkpatrick Alberts of Belle Monte, Green Springs, Gordonsville, Virginia, died Monday, October 5, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Aline Markland Alberts; his father, Joseph Alberts of Aosta, Italy and Albertville, France; and his mother, Jane Amelia Kirkpatrick Alberts of Jersey City, New Jersey.
He is survived by children, Russell Alberts, William Alberts, Robert Alberts, Katrin Crow, Bettie Holford, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Colonel Alberts was born in 1922, in Washington, D.C.
He graduated with a BS in physics from Rutgers University and was commissioned in the Army and in the Marine Corps in 1943. During World War II, he was an Executive Officer, Marine Department on the USS Fall River CA 131 and as such was present at the hydrogen bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, Operation Crossroads.
He also attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated with a BS in electrical engineering in 1948.
During the Korean War, Colonel Alberts participated in the landings at Inchon as the company commander of the first division signal company and the Chosin Reservoir Campaign as a member of the 5th Marine Regiment. During the Vietnam War, he served with the special operations group of MACV.
Following his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1964, Colonel Alberts worked in the defense industry as a signal intelligence specialist until he became head of a psycholinguistics/signal intelligence laboratory at the Syracuse University Research Laboratory. After retirement from SURL, he became a structural engineer for a Virginia Truss manufacturer and he authored two antenna maintenance manuals for the United States Navy.
Graveside services were held Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Belle Monte in Green Springs, Gordonsville.
