Emily Remler
Birth: Sep. 18, 1957
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
Death: May 4, 1990
New South Wales, Australia

Jazz Guitarist. Emily Remler began studying guitar at the age of ten. As a teen she attended Berklee College of Music. It was there that Emily began her immersion in jazz. She began wholeheartedly studying the works of several great jazz guitarists: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, and jazz horn legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. After college, Remler settled in New Orleans where she began making serious waves in the jazz community. At that point, she became convinced of the righteousness of her career choice. Said Emily of jazz performance: "When the rhythm section is floating, I'll float too, and I'll get a wonderful feeling in my stomach. If the rhythm section is really swinging, it's such a great feeling, you just want to laugh." Jazz guitar great Herb Ellis introduced Remler as "the new superstar of jazz guitar" at the Concord Jazz Festival of 1978. Emily began making critically acclaimed records as a band leader in the 1980's. She performed with many prominent jazz guitarists, including Barney Kessel, Larry Coryell, Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd. Emily was named Guitarist of the Year in the 1985 Downbeat magazine annual International Critics Poll. Remler was an adept accompanist and was selected by many leading chanteuses as their foil on guitar among them were: Astrud Gilberto, Rosemary Clooney and Nancy Wilson. She was one of the most critically lauded jazz guitarists to emerge in the 1980's. Her promising career was cut short on May 4th 1990, when she died of heart failure during a tour of Australia. Emily Remler was 32 years old. (bio by: John Southern)
