Search and Rescue Technician (SAR Tech)
424 Transport and Rescue Squadron
Sgt Gilbert died during a search and rescue mission near Igloolik (Hall Bay), Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic. He and two other rescue technicians had parachuted into icy, stormy waters in the Hecla Strait from a C-130 Hercules aircraft to save a pair of hunters stranded in their boat. All five waited three hours for a Cormorant helicopter to arrive from CFB Gander in Newfoundland, some 2700 kilometres away, however Sgt Gilbert died before its arrival.
Aged 34, Sgt Gilbert was from Baie Comeau, Québec and was married with children. He had served 13 years as a SAR technician based at CFB Trenton in Ontario. He was remembered as the consummate pro. The base commander said, "His laughter and joie de vive are only some of the many positive attributes that were so cherished by those who knew him."
He enlisted August 26, 1998 in Québec City. His awards and decorations include NATO Medal for Former Yugoslavia (NATO-FY), Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal (CPSM), Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation.
Sgt Gilbert leaves behind his wife Mélisa Lesquir, son Émeric, daughter Laurie-Anne, parents Jean-René Gilbert and Diane Pageau, brothers Dany (Christine Giguère and their children William, Antoine and Catherine), Alexandre (Amélie Doiron and their children Rosemary et Mathilde); mother-in-law Danielle Wagner, father-in-law Dominique Lesquir, brother-in-law Cédric Lesquir (Marie-Claire Tremblay), sister-in-law Jennifer Lesquir (Sébastien Viel); godparents Carol Gilbert and Estel Blackburn, many uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and his military family.
