d/o Charles Clarence and Josephine (Robinson) Defreest.
wife of Wallace A. Martin.
ROCHESTER - Eleanor Marie (DeFreest) Martin died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 in Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
She was born March 4, 1924 in Warren, the daughter of Charles Clarence and Josephine (Robinson) DeFreest.
She attended schools in Warren and graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1941 as salutatorian of her class. On Aug. 26, 1941, she married the love of her life, Wallace A. Martin of Montpelier, a graduate of Norwich University. He was later called to active duty in the Army Air Force in September of 1941. When he was sent overseas in 1942, she worked on the family farm until his return in 1945. The couple had two children. Their daughter, Joan, was one of the top eight in the country on the National Merit Scholar Exam, she passed away in 2004. Her daughter, Jacqueline, currently lives in Dover, N.H. Eleanor has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She served as the Windsor Northwest districts unpaid secretary for 25 years when Wally was superintendent of schools. Wally and Eleanor did everything together; they were golfers and at one time members of the Northfield, Randolph, Middlebury, Sugarbush and White River golf clubs. They fished all the local brooks for trout for nearly 60 years and took many 50 mile bike rides all over the state of Vermont. They hiked at least 40 of the highest peaks in Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire, including the Knife Edge of Mt. Katadin. They climbed Mt. Washington on their 50th wedding anniversary. In winter they cross-country skied in the local national forest and at the Rikert Ski Touring Center, on average of 450 miles per winter. With Eleanor as teacher and Wally with shovel and rake, they had an excellent garden up through this past summer. In her later years, Eleanor experienced declining health. She suffered a stroke, had severe arthritis and was in pain the last three years of her life. This never quenched her spirit and she remained interested in her life and family and read voraciously until the end of her life.
Besides her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her two sisters and three brothers. Besides her husband, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Marlene DeFreest of Warren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held in the spring. Online condolences may be left at www.dayfunerals.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
