Edwin A. Kracht, 80, passed away June 28, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 30 at Merle Hay Funeral Home with burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service.
Ed was born November 15, 1929 in Des Moines and proudly served in the US Navy on the USS Wadleigh during the Korean War. He was employed with the Des Moines Police Department from 1957 to 1974 where he left with the rank of Sergeant. Ed joined the Polk County Attorneys Office as a Special Investigator in 1974 where he retired in 1997 as Chief Investigator. Ed began the Crossing Guard program for the Des Moines Public Schools while he was with the Des Moines Police Department. He was also a member of the Provost Guard Unit of the Za Ga Zig Shrine. Ed loved his family, grilling on his deck, and listening to jazz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Violet Kracht; grandson, Chad Kracht; and brother, Paul Kracht.
Ed will be missed by Dottie, his wife of 31 years, and his blended family including children: Ed (Nancy) Kracht, III, Steve Kracht, Kelli Ross, Michael Kracht, Jim (Merry) Petersen, Polly Petersen, Rod Petersen, and Troy (Mary) Petersen; twelve grandchildren: Amy and April Petersen, Kelly McKinney, Tom and Linda Kephart, Jessica Dizon, Ted Petersen, Cassie Stanley, and Kristen, Jack, Jason, and Kayla Kracht; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charlene McAndrews and Barbara Holm, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
