Zelma Ziegler Gilmore, also known as “ZZ”, died on Sunday, October 19, 2014, in Pocatello, Idaho, at age 90. She was born in the very small town of May, Idaho, on October 24, 1923, to Lester “Dutch” Ziegler and Opal Wells Ziegler. She attended first through eighth grades in May in the Pahsimeroi Valley and then moved with her family to Challis, Idaho, where there was a high school. After graduating from Challis High in 1941, she enrolled in secretarial training at a National Youth Administration facility in Weiser, Idaho.
During World War II, she worked for a year at Fort Douglas, Utah, near Salt Lake City, returned to Challis to work as the Deputy County Assessor, then moved to Pocatello, Idaho, to work at the Naval Ordnance Plant as the secretary to the commanding officer. She lived in Pocatello ever since.
She met her future husband Michael Joseph Gilmore, a Pocatello native, in Challis while he was visiting friends. They married on April 24, 1946 in Pocatello after two years of dating and had three children. She stayed home with the children until they began school, then worked part time as a secretary for Union Pacific Railroad. Before having children, she also worked at Bill’s Signs, an outdoor advertising company.
In 1960, she began attending Idaho State University part-time and graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1968. That fall, she began teaching English at Pocatello High School. She successfully juggled work and/or school with being a wife and mother for many years. In the 1970s, after the children were grown, she traveled to the University of Wyoming in Laramie for a few summers to earn a Master’s degree in American Studies, which she received in 1977. She also taught high school in Hansen and Challis.
ZZ retired from teaching in 1986, and later that summer, her husband died suddenly of a heart attack. After his death, she became a “quilt-aholic” and produced many quilts each year, almost 400 in total, some on her own and others as joint projects with her quilt club friends. She was a charter member of the Snake River Valley Quilt Guild and organized the Portneuf Valley Quilt Guild. She was asked to teach at and helped to organize the ISU Women’s Quilt Club and was a member of the Blackfoot Piece Makers. She traveled to quilt festivals in Idaho, Wyoming, Texas, and even France. She won national quilt block prizes and many local quilt prizes. She gave her quilts to family and to charities, where her quilts were auctioned for fundraisers.
She was also an avid duplicate bridge player. She often said that it is a good day if you can play bridge. She continued to teach bridge classes into 2014. She also enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia, Australia, and throughout the United States.
She was preceded in death by her husband Michael Joseph Gilmore, twin sister Zelda Garner, and older sister Edna Jolley. Survivors include children, Mike Gilmore of Boise, Pat Gilmore-Brown of Beaverton, Oregon, and Kerry Gilmore of Pocatello; son and daughters-in-law Bob, Jo and Shellie; grandchildren, Michael, Laura, and Kellie; and younger brothers, Carl Ziegler of Salmon and Ken Ziegler of Mackay. She asked that we thank all of those who helped to care for her during her last few months, when she was no longer able to live independently.
