Margery Anna Underwood, 85, of New Castle passed away early Tuesday morning, April 2, 2013, at her niece's residence in Indianapolis.
She was born March 17, 1928 in New Castle and was a daughter of the late Estel and Margery (Wilson) Mukes.
She was formerly employed by the U.S. Army Finance and Accounting Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, the New Castle State Hospital in the children's ward, and also worked at the Firestone plant.
Margery was a member of the Bethel AME Church of New Castle. She was a devoted and caring woman who volunteered her time to helping others. She was an accomplished seamstress and made clothing for family and friends and those in need. She loved to cook and bake and enjoyed doing so for her family, bringing them close together for fellowship. She also prepared food and baked pies and cakes and took them to folks who were ill and confined in nursing homes. She was devoted to doing God's will by supporting various churches and missionaries.
She is survived by her God-children, Antonette (Toni) Heaggans (husband Burl), Danny Lee Jefferson (wife Sharon), and Kathy Ann Jefferson; God-grandchildren, William E. Wilson III (wife Renee), Brandon C. Wilson (wife Jennifer), Marisa T. Hampton (husband Dennis), Marco Ki-Shawn Wilson, Adrienne S. Jefferson, Terri A. Jefferson, Ebony L. Heaggans, Anika M. Heaggans, Keairra A. Heaggans and Dana Jefferson; five generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Martin Luther Underwood, who passed away Jan. 7, 1978; 7 brothers, John Harvey Mukes, James Taylor Mukes, Omer Maybra Mukes, Estel Lee Mukes, Willie Ross Mukes, Iothemer Baily Mukes, and Cicero Claud Mukes; 4 sisters, Ethel Louise Mukes Jefferson, Atta May Mukes Streaty, Elsie Marie Mukes, and Betty Jane Mukes Streaty.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 5, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Bethel AME Church in New Castle with Rev. Melvin Hall and Pastor Bill Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at the South Mound Cemetery. Friends and family may call Friday at 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
