Edgewood, Ia., Jan 10 - Special - Funeral services for George Wilson Fleming were held from the Methodist Episcopal church here Wednesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. C.W. Cleveland. Burial was made in Asbury cemetery, eight miles northeast of town.
Mr. Fleming died Jan. 4 at his home here due to heart disease from which he had been a sufferer for the past ten years.
The youngest of his family of nine children, whose parents were Mr. and Mrs. William Fleming, he was born Oct. 17, 1861 at the Fleming homestead in Elk township, where the family had settled in 1844, coming west from Pennsylvania. His early education was obtained in the local rural schools.
His marriage to Miss Mary Berry occurred on April 11, 1880. During the winter of 1897 an epidemic of malignant diphtheria took all four of the children which had been born to them, the eldest 16 years and the youngest 8 years old.
For the past 20 years the home had been in Edgewood and Mr. Fleming was closely associated with the business interests of the town. For 19 years he had been a traveling salesman for the Minneapolis Threshing Machine company. Before moving to town he was school director and township trustee in Elk township.
Since moving to Edgewood he had served as secretary of the Commercial club and for four years had held the office of mayor. For many years he was one of the board of directors of the Farmers Savings bank and for the last four years had been president of that institution.
Since early youth Mr. Fleming had been connected with the Methodist church. While living in Elk township he was a member of the official board and for the past thirty years had served in a like capacity in the Edgewood church.
He leaves besides his widow, a foster daughter, Mrs. John Reedy of Pipe Stone, and one sister, Mrs. Oscar Wiltsie of Manchester.
