The Civil War broke out and Herman enlisted in the Union Army on February 15, 1865 in Co A 48th WISC Infantry as Private and mustered out on December 10, same year, at Ft Leavenworth, KS.

Just after, the family moved to Hutchinson,MN in 1866 and lived near the Acoma Church and later moved to Hutchinson where Herman worked as a brewer at the Kleineman Brewery.
