Sanford was born in Fort Erie, Welland Co, Ontario, Canada on 24 Dec 1821, son of Jeremiah R. Clark. He married Mary Jane Dumprope there in about 1847, and moved to Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan, Wisconsin by 1850. Eight children were born to the couple there before they moved to the Claybanks area of southern Door County. They farmed in a community by Lake Michigan known as Foscoro during the height of lumbering days, as there was a large dock there for loading lumber onto boats headed for Chicago. Sanford died suddenly on 12 July 1892, after which Mary Jane moved back to Sheboygan.

The following are his obituaries:
(Obituary from Door County Advocate, 16 July 1892, page 5)
SUDDEN DEATH

"William Clark (should be Sanford), whose home is in the southern part of Clay Banks, died very suddenly on Tuesday. He was out in the barn attending to some chores, and not returning on time Mrs. Clark began to look for him, and on entering the building she was almost paralyzed to find her husband lying dead on the floor before her. Heart failure is supposed to be the cause of the sudden taking off."

(Obituary from Algoma Record Herald, 7-14-1892)
"Clark, Sanford, from Foscoro, leaves wife and 6 grown children."
