Christopher Birckhead was a seaman and a Quaker; he and his wife Anne came to Maryland by 1661. He was somewhat acquainted with conditions in Maryland because he had transported indentured servants who wanted to come to Maryland. In 1661 he surveyed 600 acres which he called "Birckhead's Parcel"; later he added "Birckhead's Meadow" and other properties. He continued his sailing business and owned two sloops (or some other kind of sailboat which privateers used at that time).
When Anne died, Christopher married Joane Day. He made his will in England and his holdings were fairly divided among his children and his wife. He and Anne have the first marked headstones found in Maryland so Far. The graves were found in "Birckhead's Meadow" and were moved to St. James Parish in 1888.
