After his mother passed away in 1912, he arrived in Canada on 23 May 1913 aboard the SS Parisian. James relinquished his Civil Servant position at the Canadian Pacific Railway Company to serve as a stretcher bearer for the Canadian Forces in the Great War (WW1). He was wounded by gunshot in the right arm in Fleurbaix France on 14 March 1915 and was honorably discharged.
James married Annabella Hardy Turnbull Herd, a nurse also originally from Scotland, on 06 June 1918 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Lachine, Quebec, Canada. They lived in Ottawa, Ontario, from 1918 onwards and had three children: Marjorie Kathleen (who died at 8 months of age), Margaret Lillian, and Ian James (John).
James died on 02 January 1977 in Ottawa.
