Irene J. Almeida, 83, of 66 Ocean Avenue, Newport, died Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Village House in Newport. She was the wife of John A. Almeida. Born in Shamokin, PA on January 6, 1924. She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Gobbo) Yurick. Irene grew up as a young girl in Pennsylvania. She worked for the Bendix Corporation in New Jersey during World War II, coming to Newport in 1949. She became a housekeeper and for many years for the Cushing Family of Newport and had also worked for the Jewett Family of San Francisco. Irene was a parishioner of St. Augustin Church. She was an avid reader and was famous of her bake stuffed lobster and Kale soup. Beside her husband John, of 56 years. She leaves her son, John A. Almeida, Jr. and his wife Artie of Altamonte, Florida. Her brother Francis Yurick of Harrington Park, N.J. Her sisters Rita Hines and Dolly Yoder of Shamokin, PA, and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at 10:00am at St. Augustin Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, R.I. Visiting hours will be held Monday, June 11, 2007 from the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Donations may be made in Irene's memory to the St. Augustin Church Building Fund, 2 Eastnor Rd., Newport, RI 02840.
