Teddy Lane Matthews, age 69, a resident of 201 Fairmount Way, New Bern, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 24, 2015 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, conducted by Rev. John Mark Windley.

Burial will follow in Harrison Cemetery, Highway 32, Plymouth.

Mr. Matthews nephews will serve as pallbearers: Ben Windley, Adam Windley, Josh Dexter, Martin Webb, Otis Gibbs and Mike Ellis.

Mr. Matthews was born in Oak City, N.C. September 26, 1945. He was the son of the late Jessie Thomas Matthews and Selma Stalls Matthews.

Mr. Matthews graduated from Bath High School and was awarded a scholarship to Edwards Military Institute.

He was a retired U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam.

After his military career, Mr. Matthews worked as a Civil Service computer programmer. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and operated the Audio Visuals for the Church.

In his spare time, Mr. Matthews was a sportsman at heart, enjoying golf, football, baseball and basketball.

On June 24, 1966, he married the former Connie Windley, who survives.

Surviving with his wife are two brothers, J. T. Matthews and wife, Carol of Garner, Sam Matthews and wife, Saundra of Billings, Montana; sister in law, Clara Matthews; brother in law, Walter Miles and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Matthews and his wife, Agnes and Bob Matthews and his first wife, Betty; and three sisters, Mabel Mason and her husband, Roscoe, Doris Jean Gibbs and her husband, Winstead and Mary Alice Miles.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at the home of his brother in law, Rev. John Mark Windley.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Pleasant Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church, 5370 N.C. 102 East, Grimesland, N.C. 27837.
