Dr. Joel Vasgaard was born to John Charles & Joan Iola (Kurtz) Vasgaard. He graduated from Murray County Central High School, Southwest State University and the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, in St. Paul. Joel was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, a neuroendrocrine tumor of the pancreas, in September 2004 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in May 2005. Family, friends and co-workers describe Joel as very dependable, whether he was working at home, for neighbors, End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum or as a veterinarian at the Lake Area Vet Clinic in Watertown, SD for the past four years. Throughout his life, he was active in Cub and Boy Scouts, various school and college organizations and was a very active lifelong member of Ellsborough Lutheran Church. He was also a member of various veterinary organizations and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Joel was an enthusiastic hunter, an avid horseman and a meticulous and talented craftsman. He enjoyed snow skiing in the Colorado Mountains, snowboarding, and slalom skiing on various bodies of water. For five years, he battled cancer with an upbeat determination and did not complain. He passed on into heaven from the Pipestone County Medical Center, Pipestone, MN. He is lovingly remembered by his parents, brother Eric, sister-in-law Stephanie, nephew Lincoln Joel and niece Annie Christine, Grandparents Iola Kurtz, John L. and Patricia Vasgaard.
