Roy B. Nelson was born in May 1889 in Iowa. Roy’s birth mother was born in Germany although his birth father’s nativity was unknown. By the age of 11, Roy had been adopted by Lewis and Mary Nelson, an older couple who lived and farmed in Palo Alto County, Iowa. Lewis was born in Denmark in 1843 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1868. Mary was born in Pennsylvania in 1843. The couple married in 1871 and had been parents of one child who had died.
Roy began attending school at the age of seven and was able to read and write. By the age of 20, Roy Beck Nelson was listed as a patient at the Cherokee State Hospital. The 1915 Iowa State Census reported that Roy was single, white, and insane and had worked as a farmer at the hospital over the past year. Roy died on 15 December 1915 at the age of 26. Family did not claim his remains, and he was buried in the hospital cemetery.
