Mr. Akin was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy as an electrician's mate, third-class and one of the first African - American Navy electrical draftsman. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
He was survived by his wife, Hannah Akin; children, Wanda M. Akin Brown (Raymond), William M. Akin III (Joi), Wankeith M. Akin (Cynthia), Wayne M. Akin (Jeneticia), Yvonne Hyatt, Lucian Hyatt III (Kathy), Crystal McGuffey (Clifton) and Glenda J. Yascone; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
