Karen Chare Austin, age 34, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, died Friday, September 29, 2000, at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Born at Pine Bluff, Arkansas on August 30, 1966, she was a daughter of Ronnie Everett Austin and Linda Swope Austin.
She was a teacher at John Brown University and Shiloh Christian School.

She was a graduate of the University of Arkansas with a master's degree in English.

She was a former Governor's Scholar, attended Governor's School and was a former member of the Arkansas Governor's Commission on People with Disabilities.

She served as a semester missionary through the North American Mission Board at the Gano Mission Center in inner City Houston and as a chaplain intern at the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she was a University Department Sunday School Teacher and also served on the Missions and Evangelism Committee, and was a former member of the sanctuary choir.

Survivors include her father and mother Ronnie and Linda Austin of Fayetteville, Arkansas, a brother; Chip Austin of Garland, Texas, her paternal grandmother; Kathryn Jewell Rodgers, of the Pleasant Ridge Community, Cleveland County, Arkansas, her maternal great-grandfather; Russell Willis Swope, Sr, of St. Petersburg, Virginia and her maternal step-grandfather, Bob Pitts, of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 3, 2000, in the morning at the First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and afternoon services at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Cleveland County, Arkansas by Rev. Jere D. Mitchell, Rev. David Harris and Rev. Don Harris.

Burial was in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Cleveland County, Arkansas, with Moore's Chapel Fayetteville in charge of the arrangements.
