Alice J. Canuto, 79, of Bloomfield, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 in Farmington. She was born Nov. 30, 1933 in Ignacio, Colo. to Joe and Mae Canuto Sr. She is Tl aashchii (Red Bottom Clan) born to Tabaahii (Waters Edge), maternal grandparents, Kinyaa' aanii (Towering House), paternal grandparents To aheedliinii (Water flow Together).
Alice was a mother, sister, auntie, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma. She went to school in Ignacio, Colo.
Alice enjoyed sewing and crocheting, was a horsewoman, sheepherder, canned fruit and vegetables. She was very independent and strong in self-will.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Wilbur Canuto Sr., Joe Canuto Jr., Steve Canuto Sr., Cecil Canuto and Ray Canuto and sisters, Ruby Betonie, Sadie Yazzie, Mary Todie and Maggie Canuto-Brown.
She is survived by her son, Alvin R. (Pauline) Benny; sister, Mabel Canuto; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Cope Memorial in Farmington with Rev. Ron Corley officiating.
Burial will follow in the Navajo Brethren in Christ Mission Cemetery in Otis.
A reception will follow at the Nageezi Chapter house.
Pallbearers are Alvin R. Benny, Elvin Benny, Elvira Benny, Delvin Benny, Jermaine Smith and Cory Blackwater.
Alice's care is entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel of Kirtland, 458 County Road 6100, 505-598-9636.
