Prudence and sister Armadilla McIntire were born in Ohio and orphaned at a young age:
Husband, Josiah Bartlett Emery b 1820 Thompson Geauga Co Ohio.
In 1863 he went to California and spent time there as a teamster. In 1868 he was run over by a wagon loaded with 2.5 cords of dry oak, the wheels passing length-wise over this body. While recovering his wife caught cold and she never recovered, dying of consumption 22 Jul 1869 in Analy, Sonoma Co. California. From the bio of Josiah Bartlett Emery pub in Osage Co Kansas.
"Soon after my sister's marriage (3 Jul 1844) my mother took in an orphan girl by the name of Prudence McEntire. I think she must have been about twelve years old. She proved to be a nice girl and a help and a pleasure to my mother; and what was best of all, she grew to be a nice woman and a good housekeeper. When she first came she did not seem very promising, but I have heard my mother say she had hopes of her from the first, because she kept her own things in order. I was seven or eight years later that she became the wife of my brother Bartlett. She made a good wife and mother." "The Sonoma County Cemetery Records book (written originally by the ladies of the D.A.R. and published in the 1940s, later updated and republished by the Sonoma County Genealogical Society) lists her as "Emery, Prudence, spouse of J. B. Emery, died 7/22/1896 at the age of 36." In an article I wrote on the Canfield Cemetery, I say "Emery, Prudence: Headstone weathered; leaning on tree; date of death clearly 1869 not 1896."
