Grant Parish Chief Deputy Dub Hattaway said the body was recovered about 300 yards downstream from the dam. Barnes' 14 foot aluminum boat and his fishing equipment were recovered Thursday.
Hataway said Grant deputies and auxiliary, Winn Parish deputies and auxiliary, Wildlife and Fisheries personnel and volunteers from the Nantachie area assisted in the search and recovery operation.
Services for Barnes were held at 2:00 p.m. in Atlanta Baptist Church, Atlanta, with Revs. Tom Barnes and Ray Teal officiating. Burial was in Sardis Cemetery under direction of Southern, Winnfield.
Barnes was a retired custodian for Atlanta High School where he worked 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Barnes of Atlanta; two sons, Jim Barnes of Jena and Terry Barnes of Wheeling; one daughter, Nellie LeBaron of Atlanta; one brother, Rayford Barnes of Shreveport; four sisters, Lela [sic Lola] Griffith, Louise Barnes, and Fanale [sic Fanell] Bandy, all of Springhill and Viola Roberge of Hula Vista, Calif.; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
