LONGMEADOW - Norman J. Adams, 90, of Tabor Crossing and formerly of Field Rd., died Tuesday at a local nursing home. He was born in Surrey, England, the son of Arthur S. and Mable G. Adams, missionaries in South China where Norman lived for 9 1/2 years. In 1921, he came to Newton, MA and attended Newton schools, graduating from Newton High in 1931. He earned his BA in Engineering from Denison University in Ohio in 1935. Mr. Adams worked for Bancroft-Walker Co., working up to Assistant Production Supt. prior to joining Johns Manville Corps., Industrial Division Sales Engineering from 1947 to 1944, at which time he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a Lieutenant in Combat on the Ulvert M. Moore, DE 442 in the Pacific Theatre. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Johns Manville, retiring as sales engineer-Western New England area, in 1977. He married Virginia Sewall Adams in 1937 in Waltham, MA, recently celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. A longtime Longmeadow resident, he served the town on the Appropriations Committee (3 years as Chairman), the Community Building Committee involved with the Police and Fire Stations for 3 years, the Recycling Commission for 5 years. Also a member of the First Church of Christ, Longmeadow, since 1946, he served on many committees and offices. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Springfield, a Corporator of Baystate Medical Center, Springfield Children's Study Home, the United Way of Pioneer Valley, a 20-year trustee of Camp Becket, YMCA Tri State, MA & RI, and an American Red Cross volunteer. He was also a member of the Engineering Society of W. MA, where he served as President in 1958-1959, and a member of Springfield Community Mental Health Consortium, Inc., in 1982. Besides his wife, Virginia (Sewall) Adams, he is survived by 3 sons, David S. of Manchester, CT, Norman G. of Newton, MA, Arthur S. of Granville, MA; a daughter, Deborah A. Brescia of Wilbraham; a brother, Dr. Philip Adams of Chattanooga, TN; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grand-children. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Ronald Adams; and 2 sisters, Bertha Waters & Stella Tyler. A memorial service will be held Saturday at First Church of Christ, 763 Longmeadow Street at 2:00 p.m. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Longmeadow Cemetery . Dickinson-Streeter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to the Church Memorial Fund.
