Veronica Rose (Fisher) Barmann went to her heavenly hone on Jan 8, 2000, from her home south of Maryville, Mo.
She was the youngest of seven daughters of Peter-Joseph Fisher and Elizabeth Jan (McLarney) Fisher of Easton, Mo., where she was born on Aug. 3, 1908. She attended Easton schools and was a graduate of Easton high School in 1926 as the salutatorian, and an outstanding captain of the championship basketball and track teams.
Veronica attended St. Teresa Junior College, Kansas City, Mo., and later received her lifetime teaching certificate from the Maryville Teacher's College.
She taught in one-room schools in Buchanan County, Mo., before marrying Charles A. Barmann on Sept. 2, 1931, at St. Joseph's Church in Easton. Veronica and Charles lived on the family farm near Maryville for the rest of their lives. Charles preceded her in death on jan. 28, 1994, after 63 years of marriage.
Veronica and Charles were the proud parents of 10 children, Bernard (Bee Murphy) Bakersfield, Calif., Robert (Alice Farnan), Maryville, Mary Jane (Jim Wynne, deceased in 2002), Terre Haute, Ind, Richard, deceased in 1999 (Mary Ann Steinhauser), Plattsburg, Mo., Father Karl Barmann, O.S.B., a member of Benet Hill Monastery, Colorado Springs, Colo., and presently assigned as pastoral minister at St. Gregoy's in Maryville, Lawrence P. Joe (Catherine Boedeker), Maryville, Teresa, deceased in 1948, Regina (Steven Paschold), Firth, Neb., and Michael (Mary Jo Busby), Maryville. Veronica has 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Veronica was active in and particpated in all aspects of her children's lives as a 4-H leader, Mother's club at school and chauffeur. She also was a member of the Merry Matrons Extentions Club and Good Neighbors Club. She served as a poll judge for elections and with Charles delivered Meals-On-Wheels for a number of years.
She loved working in her vegetable and flower garden. True to her Irish and German culture, she was a superb cook, and presented a table feast with elegance and grace.
As a lifelong Catholic, active involvement in her church was an important part of her life. As a member of St. Mary's and St. Gregory's parishes, she was active in the Legion of Mary, women's guild and a eucharstic minister. As a eucharistic minister, she visited the Maryville nursing homes for many years, embracing Benedictine values.
Veronica was also a Benedictine oblate.
For those who had the prvilege of knowing her, she will be remembered as a valiant, faithful and fun-loving woman, who led and loved through example.
Veronica was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Ellen Gram, Beatrice Fisher, Regina Fisher, Mary Kelly, Rita Fisher and Elizabeth Gregory.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 14 at St. Gregory's with Father Karl presiding and Abbot Gregory Polan, O.S.B. of conception Abbey as homilist.
