Fern C. Heller Abbott, 83, of Shady Side and previously of Bowie, died May 19 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Born to the late Hobart N. and Beaulah E. Slaybaugh Heller on April 10, 1922, in Biglerville, Pa., where she graduated from high school in 1940, Ms. Abbott then graduated from Beauty Operators School in Harrisburg, Pa., in 1941.
She joined the Marine Corps Women's Reserve in May 1943, went through boot camp with WAVES at Hunter College in New York in the 3rd Maine WR Recruit Company. She rose to the rank of sergeant before her honorable discharge in September 1945.
She married retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. William Abbott in December 1953 and was a homemaker.
She lived in many places while accompanying him on his tours of duty with the Marines, living in Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Hawaii as both a territory and as a state. They settled in Bowie and then moved to Shady Side.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Cynthia M. Reno of Suffolk, Va., and Kimberly R. Weaver of Accokeek; one grandson; two brothers, retired Army Reserve Lt. Col. Clyde N. Heller of Biglerville and Navy Chief James C. Heller of Fairfield, Pa.; and two sisters, Mary June Clark of Chambersburg, Pa., and Audrey M. Strehl of Newburg, Ore.
