John Brunton Daykins
Birth: Mar. 26, 1883
Death: Jan. 24, 1933

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Hawick, Scotland, he served as a Sergeant in the 2nd/4th Battalion York, Lancaster Regiment, British Army. At Solesmes, France, on October 20, 1918, Sergeant Daykins with 12 remaining men of his platoon, rushed a German machine gun post. During severe hand-to-hand fighting, Sergeant Daykins himself disposed of many of the enemy and secured the objective. He then located another machine gun which was holding up an operation of his company. Under heavy fire he worked his way alone to the post and returned with 25 prisoners, plus an enemy machine-gun, which he mounted at his position. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on January 6, 1919. He died at age 49 in Jedburgh, Scotland. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
