Dagmar Knudsen was born February 14, 1882, the second daughter of Niels and Maren (Olsen)Knudsen, in Skagen, Denmark. In 1885, when Dagmar was age 3, her parents and older sister, Marie Olga Caroline Knudsen, traveled from Skagen, Denmark, to America. They first settled in Riverton, IA, then moved to Ft. Dodge, IA; Ruskin, NE; Denver, CO; and back to Ruskin, NE.
About 1901, Dagmar was married to Christian Houtwed, in Ruskin, NE. They had two children, but only one, Helen, lived to adulthood. Helen E. was born in Colorado. Chris and Dagmar moved to Colorado in the early 1900's, but returned to Hardy, Nebr. (date unknown). They lived in Denver, Colorado and Chris was listed as a carpenter on the 1910 Census. The 1920 and 1930 Census report Chris and Dagmar have custody of Marie Knudsen, daughter of Dagmar's brother, J. E. Knudsen.
