Fairhaven — Mitchell "Mickey" Potkay, 82, died Friday, March 15, 1999, at Our Lady's Haven after a long illness. He was the husband of Lillian M. (Taylor) Potkay and son of the late Paul and Anna (Smith) Potkay. He was born in New Bedford and lived in Fairhaven all of his life.
He was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in New Bedford for 30 years until he retired in 1979, and then he was a bartender for Paul's Sports Corner for many years.
He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church. Mr. Potkay was a World War II Army veteran, where he saw battles in Central Pacific, Eastern, New Guinea, and Northern Solomon campaigns. He received the American Theater, Good Conduct Medals, American Defense Medal with one Bronze Star, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with four Bronze Stars. He was a life member and past commander and quartermaster of the Veterans of Foreign War Freetown Memorial Post 6643 and a life member of the Military Order of Cooties. He was also past District 6 commander, Bristol County.
Survivors include his widow; a son, William P. Potkay of New Bedford; a daughter, Nancy A. Gordon of Fairhaven; a brother, Eugene Potkay of Mattapoisett; two sisters, Anna Lagmuc of New Bedford and Rosalie Brown of Fairhaven; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Robert M. Potkay and brother of the late Boleslaw "Bill" Potkay. His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church.
