Born Dec. 24, 1923, in Warm Springs, Va., he was the son of the late Walter Cosby Bonner Sr. and Josephine E. Loving Bonner.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary Polly Polhamus Bonner, in 2002.
He was employed by the National Bureau of Standards for 35 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by three daughters, Betty Jo Bonner of Hagerstown, Sheri B. Mastromatteo of Pasadena, Calif., and Susan Tighe of Los Gatos, Calif.; one son, James E. Bonner of Rochester, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
