Her parents, Russell Underwood Watts and Diantha (Holmes) Watts (later Haley) were Oregon pioneers who crossed the plains by wagon in 1847 via the Northern Route and The Dalles, setting out from the Midwest in March and arriving in Oregon City in November. The family still has a linen tablecloth that Russell and Diantha purchased in Peoria, IL before they crossed the plains. It is now a family heirloom, traditionally displayed at a number of family weddings over the decades.
J.B. Gilbert married Irena in Albany, Linn County, Oregon, on Feb 26 1873, before he and his wife migrated to Washington Territory in the Fall of 1880 (in what is now the Rockford area of Spokane County).
