Karl was born in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, when he was 2 or 3 years old his parents relocated the family to Akron, Ohio. As a student Karl attended the local Akron schools and graduated from North High in 1936.
Karl was first married to Gladys McGullen in Akron. The marriage ended in divorce and Karl married a second time to June Irene Burke on June 11, 1949 in Akron, Ohio. Shortly after marriage Karl and June relocated to Painesville, Ohio where Karl worked for the Rayon Corporation of Painesville and later for Crescent Metal Products of Cleveland.
Karl served his country from July 1945 until September 1948 having served first in Germany from December 1945 to June 1946 and Korea from February 1947 to March 1948. Karl was a Mess Sergeant and was honorably discharged September 10, 1948.
Much of Karl's home life in Painesville was spent on a small farm in nearby Grand River, Ohio, that he and his brother-in- law Howard Binnig operated to provide food for their families. Karl was involved with the International Electrical Workers Union and an active member of the little Congregational Church in Grand River, Ohio.
