Frank Pierce Succumbs at 78

Frank Pierce, 78, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, died at 5 p.m. yesterday in the Veterans hospital at Wood, where he had been a patient since April 19.

The Pierce home had been at 702 17th avenue since 1948, when ill health forced Mr. Pierce to retire from the farm at the south edge of Monticello. He had been in poor health since suffering a stroke Jan. 20, 1945.

A native of Monticello, he was the son of James and Susan Baxter Pierce and was born July 17, 1877. He attended Monticello schools. Enlisting in April, 1898, in the Spanish-American war, he was discharged the following September.

On April 4, 1904, he was married at Freeport to Myrtle Cotherman. He farmed with his brother, Ira B. Pierce, until retirement. The Pierces observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1954.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Raymond, at home; a sister, Mrs. M. J. Magoon, Gladstone, Mich., and one grandson. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. They were Arthur, 1946; Ira B., 1952; Mrs. Ed Wittwer, 1937; Mrs. Louis Zimmerman, 1911, in Beaver Dam, and Mrs. John Falter, Janesville.

Services will be held in the Voegeli funeral home, Monticello, Mondav at 2 p.m. Rev. Paul J. Gibson of the Evangelical United Brethren church will officiate. Burial will be there in Highland cemetery, with military rites by the Amstutz-Marty American Legion post of Monticello. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Sunday.
