CECIL, BEN - age 84, of Knoxville, passed away 10:15 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center. He retired as a self-employed public accountant, and was a faithful and active member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church for over 55 years where he served God in many ways, including Sunday School teacher and deacon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the 29th Infantry Division. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Cecil; parents, Reason and Josie Cecil; brothers, Church, Harry, Poe, and Ralph Cecil; sisters, Lola Arp, Elsie Andrews, and Verona Vaughan. Survivors: daughter, Janna Backhurst; son; Ross Cecil both of Knoxville; grandchildren, Joshua DeBord and Benjamin Cecil both of Knoxville, Brooke Cardwell of Crossville, and Hollie Sielken of San Diego; great grandchildren, Caitlin DeBord of Knoxville, and Elizabeth Cardwell of Crossville; sister, Geneva Cross of Indiana; and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Stevens Mortuary Chapel with Dr. James McCluskey officiating. The family and friends will meet 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Lynnhurst Cemetery for a graveside service and interment at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at North Broadway.
